What Is Emu Oil? Where It Comes From and How It's Made
Emu oil starts as fat, rendered down from an emu and refined into the pale, almost odourless oil you'll find in a bottle labelled "pure emu oil." That's the short answer. The longer one explains why so much of what's sold under that name barely resembles what emu oil is supposed to be.
What Emu Oil Actually Is
Emus carry a layer of fat along their backs, built up to get them through long dry seasons. Farmers render that fat down with heat, then filter and refine it into oil. The result is rich in omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids, a mix that's close to what your own skin produces, which is part of why it tends to absorb quickly instead of sitting on the surface.
Where "Originally from Australia" Fits In
Emus are native to Australia, and the birds farmed for oil today, including in Canada, are descended from Australian stock. That's zoology, not a story about how any particular bottle got made, and it doesn't tell you anything about who refined the oil in front of you. We're not going to dress up the Canadian side of things with claims that don't belong to us.
Crude, Once-Refined and Fully Refined Are Three Different Products
Rendered emu fat isn't usable straight out of the process. The first pass, often called crude oil, still carries proteins, moisture and impurities that need to be filtered out before it's stable enough to sell. A once-refined oil has been through one filtration pass. Fully refined oil, the grade the American Emu Association (AEA) certifies, has gone through repeated filtering and heat treatment until the proteins, moisture and odour are gone.
That distinction matters more than most labels let on. A lot of the "pure emu oil" sold online is crude or once-refined, which is part of why it smells or looks off. Fully refined oil should be close to colourless to light straw, and it shouldn't smell like much of anything.
What AEA Certified Fully Refined® Actually Checks
The American Emu Association runs an independent testing and certification programme for member producers. Fully Refined® certification means a batch has been tested against microbial, protein and stability limits, not just labelled by whoever bottled it. None of this makes emu oil medicine. It's a moisturizer, and a good one, but it doesn't diagnose, treat, cure or prevent anything, and we're not going to pretend otherwise to sell a bottle.
